The Dangers of Osteoporosis Drugs
Osteoporosis is a serious condition that affects nearly 44 million Americans. Many of those suffering from the disease are treated with medications known as bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel and Reclast. These drugs are intended to prevent loss of bone mass in patients with osteoporosis. However, recent studies have linked bisphosphonate medications to an increased likelihood of femur fractures and with a degenerative condition of the jaw known as Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ).
In 2004 an article published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons showed a correlation between Fosamax use and ONJ. In 2005 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested an update to the labeling of Fosamax to include a reference to jawbone tissue disease.
In September 2010, an expert Task Force of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research released a study recommending that the FDA consider additional labeling to warn users of bisphosphonates of the risk of femur fractures.
It is important to know that if you have suffered a femur fracture or ONJ (also known as "dead jaw") after long term use of Fosamax or another bisphosphonate, you may have a viable product liability lawsuit.
